An Exciting New Chapter for CMFF

The Columbia Maryland Film Festival is growing into a more dynamic regional event — expanding beyond screenings to include filmmaker conversations, workshops, special events, and community experiences throughout festival week.

Our 2026 season is designed to create greater value for filmmakers, audiences, and sponsors alike.

Introducing the Columbia Maryland Film Festival Signature Film Initiative

Discover. Develop. Premiere.

The Columbia Maryland Film Festival is proud to introduce the Signature Film Initiative, a new annual filmmaker development program created to help promising storytellers grow through professional mentorship, creative collaboration, and hands-on filmmaking experience.

While most film festivals celebrate completed films, the Signature Film Initiative begins much earlier—while a film is still taking shape. Rather than focusing solely on the finished product, the Initiative invests in the creative journey itself, providing professional guidance throughout the filmmaking process. From story development and screenplay refinement to rehearsals, directing actors, production planning, editing, sound, and overall storytelling, the Initiative is designed to strengthen both the filmmaker and the film.

The program was inspired not by a committee or long-range planning session, but by a collaboration already taking place.

Our Inaugural Signature Filmmaker

In 2026, actor Debra Spears and Festival Executive Producer Robert Neal Marshall collaborated on a short film, with Debra seeking to expand her creative horizons beyond acting alone. Like many performers, Debra had experienced the challenges of pursuing auditions that too often offered limited opportunities to fully explore her craft. Rather than waiting for the next role, she chose to create one herself by writing an original short screenplay and embracing the challenge of becoming a filmmaker.

As development of the project began, what started as script discussions quickly evolved into something much larger. The collaboration expanded to include screenplay revisions, acting and performance coaching, rehearsals, camera blocking, location scouting, production planning, scheduling, props, costumes, and the countless creative decisions that shape an independent film before the cameras ever roll.

It became clear that this collaborative process represented exactly the kind of educational mentorship the Columbia Maryland Film Festival had long hoped to encourage. From that realization, the Signature Film Initiative was born.

Debra’s project now proudly serves as the inaugural film of the Initiative, with principal photography scheduled to begin shortly, followed by editing and post-production in preparation for its premiere as the 2026 Columbia Maryland Film Festival Signature Film.

As the Initiative’s first participant, Debra will always be recognized as the Festival’s Inaugural Signature Filmmaker, marking the beginning of what we hope will become a lasting tradition of discovering and developing emerging filmmaking talent.

Looking Ahead

Beginning in Spring 2027, the Columbia Maryland Film Festival will open applications for the next Signature Film Initiative.

Each year, one promising short film project will be selected to receive individualized professional mentorship from Story to Screen. The Initiative is open to filmmakers of all ages and experience levels—including actors, writers, students, recent graduates, and independent artists—who are ready to expand their creative skills and collaborate in developing an original short film.

The selected filmmaker will retain complete creative ownership of their work while benefiting from professional guidance throughout the creative process. The completed project will premiere during the Columbia Maryland Film Festival as that year’s official Signature Film, while its creator will be recognized as the Festival’s Signature Filmmaker.

The Signature Film Initiative is made possible through the Columbia Maryland Film Festival’s ongoing commitment to education, artistic excellence, and community engagement. We are actively seeking sponsors and community partners who believe that investing in artists today helps create the storytellers of tomorrow. Sponsor support makes possible the professional mentorship, educational resources, and creative guidance that define this unique program while filmmakers continue to finance and produce their own projects.

At the heart of the Signature Film Initiative is a simple belief:   Great filmmakers are not born—they are developed.
